I first went Scottish country dancing when I was a few weeks old – perks of being born into a family of dancers! The next few years were spent holding onto people’s fingertips learning to balance and dance equally. I started learning properly when I was five and danced with Chester St. Andrew Society as a social dancer and with the demonstration team until after I left university. Work took me to Birmingham where I joined Birmingham RSCDS and continued dancing. Over the years I’ve danced in some of the smallest venues through to performing at Symphony Hall and the National Indoor Arena at the Birmingham Tattoo.

I took my preliminary certificate with a cohort from RSCDS Leicester and made some good friendships – I also met Brenda Burnell for the first time since she was my examiner. A few years later and following a move to Leeds I completed my full certificate in 2012 under the superb tutelage of Maureen Haynes.
Work commitments mean it’s not possible for me to take a regular class but I take every opportunity to teach when I can which means I take a range of classes from beginners through intermediate to the advanced class and have led courses for dancers.

My passion is communicating how beautiful dancing is and how with some hard work and determination most people can achieve high standards.

Kathryn Slater

Kathryn Slater began Scottish Country Dancing dancing at the age of 3, attending classes along with her Mum. She took up Highland dancing as a teenager and also enjoyed playing for folk dancing. Kathryn gained both parts of her RSCDS Teacher’s Certificate on Scholarships at the RSCDS Summer School in the early 1990s. She has danced at, organised and led events all over the UK and Europe since the late 1980s.
